We might recommend using a crown to restore full function to a tooth that has become damaged due to decay or injury. They are also often used to repair a leaking or damaged filling, as well as in conjunction with other treatments such as a bridge or root canals. As with all our treatments and all the restorations we place, we’ll always go through all your options with you to ensure you feel comfortable and confident in your decision.

Crowns can be made of a variety of materials including metals and gold. Here at Wine Street Dental, we often recommend ceramic crowns as we believe it offers our patients both durability and a natural-looking aesthetic finish. Ceramic crowns are also bonded to the teeth helping to protect the tooth well into the future.

Crowns are normally fitted over two or more appointments. At your first appointment, we’ll take an impression after first removing any damaged, decayed or otherwise weakened parts of the tooth. Once the impression has been taken, we’ll fit a temporary crown that you will wear while your permanent crown is being made.

Your crown will be made for you off-site by skilled lab technicians and each crown is made individually for the patient and the tooth. Once your unique crown is ready – this usually takes 2-3 weeks – you’ll return to the practice to have it fitted. Once we are happy with the shape, fit, and finish of the crown, we’ll cement it into place.

We will go through all your after-care needs with you, but you should expect to experience some soreness and sensitivity for up to two days after having your crown fitted. During this time, you will want to be extra gentle while brushing your teeth, but once the area has completely healed you can care for your crown exactly as you would your natural teeth. This means regular checkups and dental hygiene appointments with us here at Wine Street Dental, as well as twice-daily brushing for two minutes, and regular flossing.
