FAQ

Why is dental hygiene so important?

It is common to get build ups of calculus (tartar) around your teeth. This build up can lead to gum disease if not removed. A hygienist will use special instruments to clean the teeth and give you bespoke advice on how to manage your cleaning going forward.

It is especially important to have frequent hygiene visits if you have implants. Poor hygiene is a big contributing factor to your implants failing.

Our hygienists are highly skilled at providing the best care and advice for you and your mouth.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a very common occurrence and the leading cause of tooth loss. It’s also been closely connected to wider health issues such as diabetes and heart issues, making it more important than ever to prevent. Luckily, gum disease is easy to prevent and treat, starting with regular dental hygiene appointments.

Why do I need to see hygienist?

It is common to get a build up of tartar (calculus) around your teeth which you cannot remove yourself at home. This build up is the starting block to gum disease. A hygienist uses special instruments to remove calculus gently and efficiently. They will then give you specific instructions on how to reduce the amount of build up tailored for your mouth.

What happens at a dental hygiene appointment?

First, our hygienists will help you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible – we even have extra comfortable treatment chairs which should help you relax and unwind. During the appointment, our hygienists will provide a thorough examination of the mouth, being sure to check for gum disease before carrying out a comprehensive cleaning. This will remove the build-up of plaque, tartar, and any debris present in the mouth and can also help remove some superficial staining of the teeth.

How often should I go to the dental hygienist?

The regime best for you will be determined by our hygienist, for most patients we at least recommend bi-annual.

What can I do at home?

If you have any worries or questions about your at-home dental hygiene care and routine, our hygienists should be able to help develop a regime that works for you. Caring for your teeth and oral health at home is really important – and should be considered the first line of defence in your dental health.

For all our patients we recommend brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, and changing your toothbrush every three months. This should help maintain your oral health and provide a good foundation on which we here at Wine Street Dental Practice can build.
